Despite the fact that Portland weather seems to think otherwise, August is just around the corner, which means that the Portland Zine Symposium is coming up. It was looking like I might not be able to attend for a while, and then only one day at most, but I’m now officially registered to table both days: August 6th and 7th. This year the organizers solicited postcard art from the tablers, which will be displayed at the show. Before I started in on the more tedious task of copying and stapling yesterday, I finished my card and sent it in. Don’t be embarrassed if the image elicits loud guffaws from you; that was my intention:
I intended for this to be amusing in an over-the-top-corniness kind of way, but maybe I’m also doing an imitation of any one of the more forgettable one-panel “Far Side” rip-off comics from your newspaper’s funny pages? Oh well, I still like it.
I also just wrapped up a four-page comic for Nicole Georges’ “Bad Roommate Zine.” The zine won’t be ready for the Symposium, but should be available soon and I’m really looking forward to reading all the other tales of cohabitation gone wrong. My piece is about a horrible past roommate and her really really horrible cat (actual names–both human and feline–were changed in the story). Here is my favorite panel from the whole thing. It may even be one of my favorite drawings I’ve ever made ever:
And in case you were wondering, yes, I did look up “cat puking” on Google image search for photo reference. Go ahead, try it yourself.
Also, I recently had the honor of being included in an art exhibit at Floating World Comics featuring the work of artists who have appeared in Tugboat Press’ “Papercutter” series. Here is an article about the show that includes interviews with me and Papercutter-ers Sarah Oleksyk, Aron Nels Steinke, and Greg Means. Our work will be up through the end of the month so if you’re in Portland you should go see it!
